On Sunday, Dec. 5, a resident reported there was vandalism of the welcome sign to the Beachgrounds Park with disturbing hate messages that are anti-Semitic and profanity including the N-word.

South Hadley Police are investigating and the DPW has removed the sign. The town will continue to monitor the area. Officer David Pratt is leading the investigation.

“This act of hate is unacceptable and is not welcome anywhere,” said Town Administrator Lisa Wong. “The work to address anti-Semitism and racism is continuous and we will do this as a community.”

“We thank the resident who brought the vandalism to the municipality’s attention. We are committed to creating a safe community for all. Hate has no home here.”

In its statement against racism, released in June 2020, the Selectboard calls on the community to become educated on racism in all forms, passive and active. The board continues to call on South Hadley residents to commit to non-racist behavior and to act in anti-racist ways whenever racism is encountered.

“The South Hadley Selectboard stands against racism in all forms, including, but not limited to violence, racism in language, in publications and teachings, and in behavior.”

To report any incidents, contact the South Hadley Police Department at (413) 538-5050.
