SOUTH HADLEY - With a massive effort from 77 volunteers, 900 pounds of trash was removed from the Connecticut River last Friday during the 2019 Source to Sea cleanup.
The cleanup focused on a .5-mile stretch of the Connecticut River in South Hadley from the Chicopee town line north to Texon Park.
Led by the South Hadley Planning and Conservation Department, 50 South Hadley High School students and 27 adults volunteered four hours of their time Sept. 27 to the Source to Sea cleanup.
Among the trash removed from along the river was 200 pounds of recyclable plastic and glass, 650 pounds of trash, 50 pounds of scrap metal, one tire, one junk bicycle, one wheel hub, and an old electronic device of some sort.
Thank you to all of the volunteers, the incredible SHHS students, SHHS teachers Heidi Ragno, Ramona Smith, and Laura Luetjen, and DPW Parks Supervisor Bill Simard and his crew for picking up all of the trash and transporting it to the transfer station for disposal and recycling.
