[ARCHIVED] Independence Day celebration, fireworks held July 3 at MESMS

Bright fireworks burst across a dark sky

South Hadley's Independence Day Celebration will be held Wednesday, July 3 with a rain date of Friday, July 5 at the Michael E. Smith Middle School.  The festivities begin at 6 p.m. and the show will commence at 9:30 p.m.  The best spot to watch is from a front row seat on the fields at the Michael E. Smith Middle School.  Bring a blanket, chair, picnic basket and bug spray!

Local non-profits will be selling food items such as hot dogs, popcorn, fried dough, root beer floats, cotton candy, pretzels and assorted beverages as well as glow sticks and other toys.  There will be various kid friendly activities such as a bounce houses and face painting.

There will be a DJ in the main parking lot from 6-9:30 p.m.  The South Hadley Community Band will play patriotic music behind the school starting at 8:30 p.m.

Central Maine Pyrotechnics will provide the fireworks for the event with an amazing show featuring more than 2,600 shells!  The show should last around 20-25 minutes.

This event is free to the public and would not happen without PeoplesBank, the Major Corporate Sponsor.  We thank them for their efforts over the years with this event!  To date, we have also received generous donations from South Hadley Electric Light Department/Fibersonic (SHELD), International Golf Maintenance/Ledges Golf Club (IGM), Metras Insurance, Veryl's Automotive, Associated Flooring, Ohana School of Performing Arts and the South Hadley Lions Club.

If the weather is questionable, cancellation information will be available on the town’s website (www.southhadley.org), our Facebook page and the cancellation hotline at 538-5017 x233.  If we must cancel due to weather, the event will be moved to Friday, July 5.  A decision is typically made early in the day to protect the fireworks from the wet weather.

Event organizers have stressed some important items for the safety of all attendees.  Alcohol, tobacco and the use of drones are prohibited from use on school ground.  Additionally, pets are not allowed at the school.

If you have questions, contact the Recreation Department at 413-538-5017 x203 or recreation@southhadleyma.gov.
