Residents are invited to discuss plans for construction of a 72-unit apartment building on the former supermarket site in the Woodlawn Shopping Plaza at 501 Newton Street. The meeting will be held Wednesday, June 26 from 6-8 p.m. in the community room of the South Hadley Public Library located at 2 Canal St.

Since purchasing the Woodlawn Shopping Plaza in 2016, South Hadley Plaza LLC has offered retailers, restaurants and other businesses a prime location from which to serve South Hadley residents. With space at the plaza to grow and diversify, the addition of attractive, high-quality apartments fills a need in the South Hadley market.

South Hadley Plaza LLC plans to build 72 mixed-income apartments on a three-acre portion of the plaza. The four-story elevator building will contain a mix of one, two and three-bedroom apartments, a property management office, laundry room, community room, and other spaces for resident activities. Parking will be provided for 115 vehicles. An adjacent green space will contain a lawn, benches and tables, and bicycle racks.

Woodlawn Shopping Plaza is located in the Newton Street Smart Growth Zoning District, which allows multi-family residential uses. South Hadley Plaza LLC is preparing to submit an application for plan approval to the Town of South Hadley. In advance of submitting it, residents are invited to share thoughts on the plans for the new residential development of the plaza at the June 26 meeting.
