In honor of Memorial Day, a Memorial Day ceremony hosted by South Hadley VFW Posy 3104, South Hadley Sons of the American Legion, and South Hadley American Legion Post 260, will be held on Monday, May 27 at 11 a.m. at South Hadley High School in the auditorium.

The inter-generational event will serve as a heartfelt tribute to our nation’s fallen heroes through words, music, and images. The location is accessible to all and allows for the event to be held rain or shine. In addition to music from the student band, a video presentation will be shown honoring fallen heroes.

Doors open at 10 a.m. for coffee and donuts. The ceremony will follow at 11 a.m.

Earlier in the day two wreath-laying ceremonies will take place at 8 a.m. at the town hall memorial and 8:30 a.m. at the town common memorial. These are also open to the public.

There will not be a parade as per a decision by the local veteran community, who felt a festive parade was more appropriate for a holiday such as Flag Day instead of a day as sacred and solemn as Memorial Day.

This year to celebrate Flag Day, there will be a flag retirement ceremony on June 15 at 1 p.m. at Buttery Brook Park. Next year, a parade will accompany Flag Day on June 14, 2020.
