The Town of South Hadley will swear in its newest chief of police on Jan. 4.
A ceremony and reception for incoming South Hadley Police Chief Jennifer Gundersen will be held at 9 a.m. in the Selectboard Meeting Room in South Hadley Town Hall, located at 116 Main St.
“We are all very excited about Chief Gundersen starting a new phase of her outstanding career here in South Hadley and how it will create positive synergy for the community,” said Town Administrator Michael J. Sullivan. “Her experience and education will serve her well in the Town of South Hadley.”
Gundersen will be the town’s first female police chief. She was appointed to the position in November by Sullivan following a comprehensive search which drew more than 25 applicants from five states.
Prior to her work in South Hadley, Gundersen has served with the Amherst Police Department for 24 years in positions from patrol officer to captain. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science from Stonehill College, a Master of Science degree in criminal justice administration, and a Master of Liberal Arts degree in public administration.
She has a solid reputation throughout the region and is highly regarded by her colleagues. Gundersen resides in Easthampton with her wife and two children.
