We are pleased to announce that the DPW has new recycling bins for sale! These new bins are taller and slightly less wide than our others, but hold more (22 gallons). They were purchased with grant monies from DEP, with bottles & cans in mind, as those tend to take up more room than paper and also blow about on windy days. They have a vented lid, with a handy slot for placing in items, so the lid is much less likely to blow away as well. They are for sale for $10, check or money order only, made out to the Town of South Hadley. The DPW offices will sell them Monday-Friday from 8-4.
Just a friendly reminder, South Hadley collects recycling in what is called 'dual stream', meaning paper/cardboard in one container and bottles & cans in another. Many towns around us have gone single stream, or 'all in one', and this has caused some confusion. Please also be aware that plastic bags are never accepted either at the curb or here at the recycling center - they jam the equipment at the Springfield MRF where the materials are sorted, and any bags containing recyclables are thrown away. The Big Y and other local stores accept plastic bags for recycling.
We do still supply the regular 18 gallon bins for free, limit two per household.
